Poonany's Thoughts

Posted : 17 years, 4 months ago on 28 August 2007 04:08 (A review of Gangs of New York)

It's 1863. As the American Civil War rages in the South, violent race wars in New York's notorious Five Points slums threaten to tear the city apart. The American-born Nativists, led by the ruthless Bill "The Butcher" Cutter Daniel Day-Lewis, control the points through bloody gang wars. They despise the "invading" immigrants, especially the Irish-Catholics. When Bill dispatches their "Priest" Vallon Liam Neeson, Vallon's son, Amsterdam Leonardo DiCaprio, swears vengeance against the Butcher. He grows up to become Bill's trusted right hand man, if only to make revenge all the sweeter. With so much to say and so little space, let me "cut" to the chase and say Gangs of New York is an absolutely epic film. A stellar cast, a magnificently recreated set, jaw-dropping cinematography, detailed costumes, bloody battle scenes and a historical context made more weighty given New York's recent turmoil. Not to mention one very passionate director Martin Scorsese.

Poonany's Thoughts

Posted : 17 years, 4 months ago on 28 August 2007 03:58 (A review of Sin City)

This is an amazing film and I would recommend it to everybody. Set in black and white with splashes of colour this film tells Three overlapping stories.

What I will say is if you watch five minutes and don't really think you are enjoying it then carry on because trust me after about fifteen minutes you will be as hooked as I was.

The way the film is shot is brilliantly different and the stories are all as compelling as each other. The splashes of colour bring a vividness to the film which many films fail because of.

What I would say though is this film is quite gory so be careful who you are watching it with. In my opinion it is an amazing film.

Posted : 17 years, 4 months ago on 27 August 2007 05:29 (A review of Gladiator)

I thought Gladiator was everything a movie should be !! It was refreshing to see such a well done film without the need for cursing or sex. I am surprised at the "R" rating, in that the battle scenes were very tastefully done and the filming did not, as a general rule, focus in on any gore. There is a little bit of the Prince of Egypt in the beginning of the story. A father/leader (Caesar/Pharaoh), two sons, one natural and one adopted, with the future of the nation (Rome/Egypt) at stake. And like the Biblical Esau and Jacob story, one 'brother' steals the father's blessing. In this film evil comes in many forms The brutal war at the beginning, the Emperor of Rome, and the tiger. In myth the chaos monster must be overcome. Maximus' victory over the tigers assures his place as ultimate victor in the story's final ending. He becomes "Maximus the savior." In fact that is a closing line in the film. The stadium scenes resonate with 'Spartacus' and DeMille's 'Sign of the Cross.' They are spectacular to watch and the chariots give it a real 'Ben Hur' feel at times. In fact the whole plot is very similar to Ben Hur.

Poonany's Thoughts

Posted : 17 years, 4 months ago on 24 August 2007 05:28 (A review of The Colour and the Shape)

The album contains such brilliant songs like Everlong, Monkey Wrench and Wind up. There are few slow tracks however, the best being February Stars, and these add a mellow kind of side to the album, which with all rock albums is overshadowed by the more hardcore tracks. And might i add Dave Grohl is fucking bad ass.

Posted : 17 years, 4 months ago on 24 August 2007 04:46 (A review of The Godfather)

The Godfather Death, power, violence but also love, passion and reason. This film has touched the minds of millions since it's realese. This film has no generic time span as it will remain a classic for the rest of time.

Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy is about an all-male news team whose close-knit camaraderie is infiltrated by a gasp! woman .This could easily turn into one of those quotable cult comedies that grows on you the more you watch it. If only it wouldn't try so damn hard to be funny some of the time.
Even though it feels the need to lapse into juvenile clowning around every once in awhile, Anchorman is still gonna make you laugh--hard.

Posted : 17 years, 4 months ago on 23 August 2007 03:58 (A review of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion (PAL))

Pros
Open-ended design is awesome and combat is AAA.
Incredible animations, fantastic physics, and a breathtaking world.
100+ hours gameplay.
Cons
Occasional glitches are a little bothersome.
There are minor framerate issues.
Lip-syncing is hilariously off.

that being said...holy fucking god!!!

Madden NFL 08 is a great handheld football game, but it offers little new content to make it worthwhile to those who already bought last year's game.

Hey, thanks for the vote. And I like your thoughts on the Foo Fighters and Dave Grohl - Monkey Wrench is my favourite.
